Trainee Expectations

Mentors and trainees complete annual Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to ensure alignment between their goals for TNDA training and the outcomes reached during the training period. The IDPs support a collaborative mentor/mentee relationship and encompasses a range of domains including goals and progress on 1) Research, 2) academic/intellectual, 3) technical training, 4) career development, 5) TNDA core competencies and training milestones. Trainee accountability also includes the following basic principles. The trainee will:

  1. Meet weekly with the mentor and actively engage in training and research.
  2. Exhibit initiative, research competence, and productivity warranting co-authorship on conference abstracts and peer-reviewed publications.
  3. Prepare applications for future funding, including at least one independent research application by the second year of the training program.
  4. Be responsive to critiques provided by the mentors/peers and will strive to improve as indicated.
  5. Attend all required components of the TNDA curriculum and actively participate in all other aspects of the TNDA curriculum, structuring their research schedule to accommodate these activities. A commitment of at least 2 years to the TNDA program is required.
